Penguin Ice Eggs
Pupils in Primary 1 have been learning all about Penguins. We focused on the Emperor Penguin and we discovered that the mother penguin lays the egg and places it on the father penguin's feet where a flap on his tummy keeps the egg warm. After 60 days, the chick penguin hatches.
Using information we learned, we decided to create our own penguin ice eggs. Pupils put a toy penguin inside a balloon and added water. We put the balloons in the freezer and left them overnight. The next day we removed the balloon and discovered the penguin was now in an ice egg. Children handled the ice eggs to investigate how cold they felt. We then left them in different areas to see which egg would melt first. We discovered the eggs melted much faster in a warm, bright area.
Just for fun, pupils then made more ice eggs but added food colouring to the water in the balloon. Pupils preferred the coloured ice eggs to the clear ones.
