P6/7 WAU Environmental Projects.
As part of their World Around Us, P6/7 learned about the importance of the rainforests and how they regulate the Earth’s climate. In groups, the children chose a rainforest and researched the plants and animals that live there. They learned that despite the fact the rainforests are thousands of miles away, they are vital for our well being here in Ireland. Rainforests store nearly half of the world’s rainwater and contain plants that are used in modern medicines. Rainforests also absorb massive amounts of carbon dioxide.
However, it was during these investigations that other environmental issues came to light. The children were most concerned to learn about the serious problems caused by the production of plastic. Using information and images from Newsdesk, we investigated the impact of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. It was during these investigations that the supermarket Iceland, released their controversial Christmas advert highlighting the plight of the orangutans of Malaysia, who lose their habitats due to the world’s insatiable appetite for palm oil.
P6/7 class produced projects to raise awareness of some of the environmental issues that concerned them and suggested ways in which we can help. These projects will be presented to the rest of the school during assembly.
