Primary 1 are continuing to explore everything Arctic. We have been learning about the life cycle of a penguin and how they begin their life as an egg. To follow on from this we decided to make penguin ice eggs.
We put toy penguins inside balloons and then used a funnel and a jug to add water to the balloons. We tied the balloons and put them in the freezer for 24 hours.
The next day, we ‘hatched’ the eggs out of the balloons and it was so exciting to be able to see the penguins inside the now, frozen and solid egg. We passed the eggs around to feel how cold, slippery and heavy they were.
After we finished investigating our eggs, we decided to explore further. We wanted to find out how to get the penguin back out of the eggs and after a short discussion we decided the eggs needed to melt. We had four eggs. We placed one in a dark area, one in a light area, one in cold area and one in a warm area. We checked back on the eggs at the end of the day. The eggs in the warm and light areas had melted but the eggs in the cold and dark area were still partly solid and had only melted a little.
So much learning from a simple activity. Well done P1.
As it is now February, we decided to make different size ice cube hearts to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We did this using water and red glitter. We went on to further explore melting, by letting the ice hearts melt in warm water in the water tray leaving us with pretty, sparkly water.
Our Resource Area now truly looks like the Arctic. P1 children painted igloos, polar bears and penguins using cold colours. These are on the display board along with their igloos and ice bergs made out of junk art.
