Celebrating Science Week in Primary 1

14th Mar 2020

Our little scientists in Primary 1 have been investigating and exploring different science experiments.

Pupils made water walk from full cups to empty cups through the absorption process. This also consolidated their knowledge of colouring mixing from a previous WAU topic as the coloured water mixed to form a new colour.

Pupils then investigated the ‘Leak Proof Bag’. We filled large sandwich bags with water, tied them and poked numerous pencils through the bag. Keeping the pencils in place meant there were no leaks despite the bags being pierced.

Our last experiment was investigating liquids and solids. We made gloop using cornflour, water and food colouring. We loved the sensory aspect of mixing these ingredients with our hands. The more we mixed, the thicker the gloop got. The gloop stayed in a liquid form, but when we lifted and squeezed it, we were able to make a solid ball. The most exciting part was dropping the gloop ball and watching it transform back into a liquid.
The science behind the gloop is that when water is added to cornflour, the stringy particles in cornflour spread out as opposed to dissolving. This allows the gloop to act as a solid and a liquid. When you apply pressure to the mixture in your hands, the particles join together and the mixture feels solid. However when laid to rest, the particles slide over each other and form a liquid.
