Apple Harvest Time 🍏🍎
Once again our local farmers are busy harvesting the all important apple crop that is so synonymous with our famous county. The orchards are busy with squads of apple pickers carefully pulling the apples and filling the familiar bins with the large, green fruits, so highly sought after, the world over.
P6/7 are learning about this yearly horticultural event in their WAU. They have had opportunities to share their knowledge and experience while viewing photographs of local orchards laden with Bramley apples.
Children learned the surprising way that Bramley apples were introduced to County Armagh by a Loughgall grower during Victorian times and how their great great grand parents planted the first Bramley apple trees.
P6/7 are fascinated by the important role of bees and other insects in the life cycle of an apple. They are learning about the life and times of bees and how the human race depends on them for survival.
We are looking forward to a visit from a local farmer 👨🌾 to talk to us about apple growing and to a taste of his delicious, famous apple juice!
The apple topic also inspired P6 pupil, Tara, who baked a delicious apple cake! Thanks, Tara!
