Apple Farming In County Armagh.
The primary six and seven class are currently investigating apple production in County Armagh. They were delighted to welcome local apple farmer, Pat Mc Keever, into their class this week.
Pat discussed apple growing from the pruning stage to pollination through to the bloom and the harvest. He informed the children of the dangers that the crop is exposed to like disease and pest infestation. The children were fascinated to learn about the pests and how the farmer protects his apples with various sprays.
Pat, who owns Long Meadow Farm, brought delicious apple juice for the children to taste and described how the juice is made and how cider can be made from both eating and cooking apples. The children then had the opportunity to ask Pat questions about apple growing.
We would like to thank Pat for giving up his time so generously during this very busy time and for the delicious apple juice!
